Longwood Garden’s Main Fountain Garden, often referred to as the crown jewel of North America’s fountains, has been returned to its former glory with the help of Conshohocken’s Lepore Masonry & Stone, according to a staff report from More Than The Curve.

After eight decades of entertaining millions of visitors, the Main Fountain Garden needed an overhaul and update of its mechanical system, as well as extensive stonework restoration.

However, Longwood Garden officials wanted to ensure they stayed true to the vision of its founder, Pierre S duPont, throughout the entire renovation process. Thankfully duPont’s philosophy of ‘adaptive restoration’ gave them the flexibility to add some new elements such as the Pumphouse Plaza.

The work performed by Lepore Masonry & Stone included patching, crack repair, reproduction, and full unit replacement. Also, to accommodate the excavation and other work performed underground, over 4,000 pieces of limestone units had to be disassembled and transported its offsite warehouse.

Each piece was restored before being returned to the renovation site for installation.

Now the fully restored Main Fountain Garden is once again an amazing feat of design and engineering that now also utilizes advanced technology to provide a display to amaze visitors.
