Forgotten Cats, a Delaware-based nonprofit that provides a humane and effective way to prevent the suffering of kittens born to abandoned and homeless cats, helps the animals find a permanent home through a network of eight pet stores, three of which are in Montgomery County, writes Bill Rettew Jr. for the Daily Local News.

About 10,000 outdoor rescue cats a year are trapped, neutered, vaccinated, and released. Many are adopted out through the PetSmart stores in King of Prussia and Jenkintown and the Petco in Stowe.

Spring is “kitten season.” With three litters per year, and three to five cats per litter, a breeding female can create a 20-cat colony in a year. Cats born in April are able to reproduce in September.

Every cat is spayed or neutered, given shots and vaccinations, treated for ear mites, fleas, and worms and tested for feline AIDS and feline leukemia.

These services, performed by 600 volunteers, with just a handful of paid employees, would cost $400 if a private veterinarian was called in. Administration expenses are just 10 percent of operating costs.

“We pinch every penny because we have to,” said Felicia Cross, the founder and executive director of Forgotten Cats.
