Former Widener University Delaware Law School professor and now sought after private admissions counselor, Doretta Massardo McGinnis from Gladwyne, is helping students with their college admissions through Strive for College, writes Kerry Hannon for Forbes.

Strive for College is a free online community that provides virtual online mentoring for students from low-income families. It is part of a new initiative by Encore.org, called the Generation to Generation campaign which aims to get one million adults over 50 over the next five years to volunteer, and help young people thrive.

McGinnis became a private admissions counselor after she left academia three years ago.

“I’m strongly committed to working with college applicants who may be the first generation in their family to go to college,” said McGinnis. “It’s personal for me. My mother did not attend college. My father was a first-gen student.”

And the reward for all of her hard work is immeasurable.

“I love seeing students take another step toward their dream and exposing them to options they might not have been aware of,” she said.
