Survey Shows that Female Doctors with Children Face Extra Challenges and Discrimination
A survey has found that female doctors who have children such as Abington pediatrician Amanda Jones, face additional challenges and discrimination, writes Alan Yu for NewsWorks.
The survey, published in the latest issue of Journal of the American Medical Association: Internal Medicine, found that 2,000 out of over 5,700 respondents said they suffered discrimination because they were mothers.
Jones remembers the struggles of looking after her first son during her hospital residency.
“Every fourth night, I was on call for 30 hours, I chose to breastfeed my son,” she said, “but that meant pumping every three hours when I was away from him.”
