The Narberth Community Food Bank, which began providing its vital services during the recent Great Recession, has been ordered by the Pennsylvania Department of State to stop soliciting donations, writes Justine McDaniel for Philly.com.

The food bank was started by resident Gigi Tevlin-Moffat in 2009 to help neighbors in Narberth Borough and Lower Merion Township weather the economic downturn. Informal food drives were held during its founding year and the organization began filing the paperwork to receive nonprofit status two years later.

However, according to Department of State spokeswoman, Wanda Murren, the state has no record of the nonprofit ever being registered.

“All the food bank needs to do at this point is get their paperwork together and get their registration properly filed,” said Murren.

This is not the only problem for the Main Line food bank, as it is also behind on rent. It was served with a notice of default in early April for failing to meet its obligations for the space it rents from the Borough.

“We would be willing to work with the food bank to maintain them as a tenant, assuming that they were able to fulfill all the terms of the lease,” said Borough Solicitor John Walko.
