The Military Times has designated Montgomery County Community College as one of its “Best for Vets” schools, indicating that it’s a good fit for service members, military veterans, and their families.

Every year, the website, an independent news and information source for service members, surveys veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement at more than 500 participating colleges.

MCCC is committed to providing the services needed by student veterans as they transition from military life to civilian and campus life. A designated Veterans Resource Center at the Central Campus in Blue Bell provides student veterans with a place where they can connect with other veterans and meet with Veterans Resource Coordinator Michael Brown for assistance with benefits and services.

Similarly, MCCC has a Veterans Resource office at its West Campus in Pottstown with part-time Veterans Resources Coordinator Denise Williams.

“When veterans transition from the military to college, there can be some challenges,” Brown said. “We want to make that transition smoother, by offering opportunities, benefits, education, and connection with other veterans here on campus.

“It is an honor to be on this list, and as a college, our goal is to make sure we are meeting the needs of our veteran students from the day they get here, until the day they graduate.”

In addition to services, the college has an active Student Veterans Organization that meets weekly. The group engages in advocacy and education concerning veterans’ issues, and volunteers in an array of community-service opportunities.

To further support veterans, MCCC offers unique programs, such as free yoga and meditation sessions each semester for both student and community veterans. Last year, student veterans had the opportunity to attend a Veterans Mindfulness Retreat, led by Brown and Psychology faculty members Dr. Anne Marie Donohue and Dr. Deb Greenspan, to help decrease stress and improve their overall emotional well-being.
