In an effort to reduce the travel time between King of Prussia and Philadelphia along Interstate 76, PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards has announced a long-term, comprehensive, multi-modal transportation management plan, writes Paul Vigna for the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

The plan envisions significant changes which include expanded public transit and improved management of traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway and local roads, as well as potential trail improvements.

“It’s imperative that we take advantage of new technologies and partner with SEPTA and other key stakeholders to offer citizens more attractive options for travel between Philadelphia and the northwest suburbs,” said Richards.

She added that the planned strategy has several elements to ensure travel is improved for all commuters. These will help people driving on the expressway, riding SEPTA’s regional rail to and from Philadelphia, or bicycling along the Schuylkill River Trail.

Among the components included in the plan are the deployment of Active Traffic Management technologies on Interstate 76, extension of public transit services along the regional rail line Manayunk/Norristown, and the modernization of nearby traffic signal systems.

The new initiative received the support of Gov. Tom Wolf, who called it an important step forward on the road to improving infrastructure and traffic management.

“This roadway and the entire corridor are vital to the economic viability of the region and my administration will continue to prioritize improvements,” said Wolf.
