Ursinus College is offering students “The Philadelphia Experience,” a program based around the study-abroad concept, but instead focused on Philadelphia, writes Susan Snyder for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

As part of the program, known as PhillyX, students stay on Drexel University’s West Philadelphia campus for a semester. From there, they can get truly immersed in the city by working internships in its numerous businesses and agencies.

“Philly is kind of a living classroom for us,” said Kelly Sorensen, interim associate dean at Ursinus.

There are several classes being offered as part of PhillyX, including professor Domenick Scudera’s “Introduction to Theater” and “Memoir Writing,” taught by associate professor Michelle Nzadi Keita.

Scudera uses the proximity to the city to take students to shows at city theaters, where they can meet and talk to cast members. Keita takes students on city exploration tours to well-known sights so that they can experience the city to help better understand it.

“There’s more than one truth in the world, but until they sort of feel it, it’s hard to realize,” Keita said.
