Emma Walmsley has been named the new CEO at GlaxoSmithKline, the United Kingdom’s largest drug manufacturer with facilities in Upper Merion and Upper Providence, breaking the glass ceiling in big pharmaceutical companies, writes Linda Loyd for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

She will be the first woman to head Britain’s GSK, as well as the first woman at the helm of one of the Top 25 pharmaceutical companies in the world. Walmsley will take over from Andrew Witty when he retires at the end of March.

“I’ve never primarily defined myself by my gender,” she said. “I don’t think of myself as a woman in business; I think of myself as a business person.”

She said she was lucky enough to work for companies or in countries where her gender has not limited or restricted her.

“Obviously, I know that’s not the case for everyone,” said the mother of four. “It’s not the case everywhere, and the statistics show we’ve still got a lot of progress to make.”
