Vacant for more than a decade, an empty lot along the railroad tracks on Union Avenue in Bala Cynwyd has gotten a step closer to having a new five-story building constructed on the site, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for the Main Line Media News.

The Lower Merion Planning Commission recently gave the nod to the newly proposed structure. The Building and Planning Committee then gave a positive recommendation to the Board of Commissioners, which approved the tentative sketch plan last week.

Under the proposed plan, 10 Union Avenue Associates will build an apartment building with 112 units on the site with a driveway off Union Avenue, starting on the neighboring Bala Gym property. The proposal also includes 69 parking spaces above ground and 99 below.

One of the problems for the proposal is the nearby Union Avenue Bridge over the SEPTA Cynwyd Line, which is expected to be rebuilt. However, while the project has been designed, it is still waiting for SEPTA to schedule its review.
