Parents whose newborns are admitted into neonatal intensive care units (NICU) can feel isolated spending endless hours away from their babies, Thanks to an innovative new technology, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery in East Norriton is now transforming that isolation into a virtual connection that is available around the clock.

To make the separation from babies staying at The Arthur and Lea Powell Neonatal Intensive Care Unit more bearable for families, the hospital has provided a means to view the infants through a secure online portal from anywhere, as long as there is Internet service, by tapping into the password-protected NicView camera system, writes Gary Puleo in the Lansdale Reporter.

The camera system, manufactured by Natus Medical, Inc., delivers a secure streaming image, can be used on any laptop, smartphone or tablet, a press release noted.

The first new moms to use the technology were confined to their beds and unable to visit the NICU, so the cameras proved to be a blessing for them, noted Marie Mo, Clinical Director of Labor & Delivery. ”They were really happy to view their babies from their bed on the postpartum unit,” Mo said. “One of the first new moms to use the technology has relatives that live out of the country and couldn’t travel to the hospital so they were thrilled to view the baby on their computer. Another family has a two-year-old daughter at home and they incorporated the NicView camera into her bedtime routine so she checks on her baby sister every night before she goes to bed.”
