Popular Main Line bakery and café The Buttery opened its newest location in Bryn Mawr over the weekend, writes Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The cafe brings its scratch-made breads, pastries, and seasonal dishes to Lancaster Avenue.
A Family-Owned Expansion Along the Main Line
The 82-seat café is the third current location for husband-and-wife owners John and Silenia Rhoads. The couple founded the original Malvern Buttery in 2015 before expanding to the Ardmore Farmers Market last fall.
The Rhoadses viewed Bryn Mawr as a natural next step and a central gathering point along the Main Line.
What to Expect Inside
The Buttery is designed to feel comfortable for everything from a quick coffee stop to a leisurely family lunch. The spacious café features communal tables, corner booths, and smaller seating arrangements.
It is open daily from 7 AM to 5 PM, with kitchen service available until 3 PM.
The Menu
The full breakfast and lunch menu includes bagels, quiches, sandwiches, tartines, salads, and specialty drinks made with Passenger Coffee.
Customer favorites include the breakfast sandwich on an everything brioche bun with harissa aioli, the bakery’s signature sablé shortbread cookie, and its flaky kouign-amann.
To celebrate the grand opening, The Buttery introduced a Bryn Mawr-exclusive lemon-poppy kouign-amann made with a creamy house-made poppy seed spread and lemon sugar.
Local Sourcing and In-House Production
The bakery emphasizes local sourcing, using locally grown grain for its flour and eggs from Highspire Hills Farm in Glenmoore.
Most menu items are prepared in-house, including the roasted meat used in its sandwiches.
Dinner Service and Liquor License on the Horizon
The Bryn Mawr location currently offers breakfast and lunch only, but have plans for dinner service and a liquor license in the months ahead.
In the meantime, guests can enjoy dinner at the Malvern location on Thursday through Sunday evenings.
What’s Next for The Buttery
The company’s growth has been supported by a centralized bakehouse that opened in Norristown last year.
The Rhoadses are also preparing to open a Northern Liberties café later in 2026, with additional expansion planned for 2027.
