Malooga’s Narberth Location Brings Authentic Yemeni Cuisine to the Main Line

Slow-cooked, spice-forward, and meant to be shared—a table spread at Malooga captures the communal spirit at the heart of Yemeni dining culture.

Yemen has met the Main Line. Malooga, the Yemeni restaurant that quietly became one of Philadelphia’s most talked-about dining destinations, has opened a second location in Narberth—and it’s bringing something the suburb hasn’t tasted before, writes Ed Williams for Main Line Today.

Co-owner Mohammed Aqlan, who first stepped into a kitchen at age 12 in Yemen, built the new location with the neighborhood in mind. The ownership team turned to crowdfunding to get the project off the ground, bringing in four local investors who helped shape the restaurant into a genuinely community-rooted destination before serving a single dish.

For diners unfamiliar with Yemeni cuisine, Malooga eases guests in through a menu of slow-cooked, spice-forward dishes. The menu features sambusas, fahsa, manakish flatbread, and the standout lamb haneeth, braised to tenderness and served over fragrant rice layered with dill, tomato, garlic, and onion.

The room matches the food’s warmth. Arabesque design details, low sofa seating, and a communal dining setup create an intentional nod to Yemeni hospitality culture, where the table is never rushed and guests are never strangers.

With outdoor dining on the way, Malooga is set to become one of those rare neighborhood spots that draws visitors from well beyond the zip code.
