Before Liam O’Leary became one of college baseball’s most compelling stories, he was a Souderton Area graduate sitting at Montgomery County Community College asking himself a question most players never want to face: Was it time to walk away?
O’Leary began his college career at Montco in 2023 with few expectations and a decision looming. About a week before school started, he chose to chase the game as far as it would take him.
It has taken him further than almost anyone could have imagined, writes Becca O’Reilly for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
From Montco to the National Stage
O’Leary, now 21, helped lead St. John’s to the NCAA Super Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, only the second Super Regional appearance in program history and the first since 2012.
The junior right-hander entered the weekend as one of the team’s most important arms, posting a 3.25 ERA with 74 strikeouts across 105⅓ innings and earning unanimous first-team All-Big East honors.
His path there was unconventional by any measure.
After Montco, O’Leary transferred to Lackawanna College, where he helped lead the program to the NJCAA Division II College World Series.
From there, he earned a spot at St. John’s, where he has developed into the Red Storm’s ace.
Playing Through Loss
What makes O’Leary’s story hit harder than a late-inning comeback is what he carried to get here.
His father, Kevin, who was his first coach and the person who gave him his love for the game, died unexpectedly in 2022.
His mother, Jenny, died in 2024. Shanleigh, his sister, said that baseball remained one of the ways Liam stayed connected to their father.
That context does not make the strikeouts and innings more impressive in a statistical sense. It makes them mean something more.
A Montco Story Worth Watching
For Montgomery County, O’Leary’s run in the NCAA Tournament is more than a feel-good sidebar.
It is proof that a path to the national stage can begin close to home, at a community college, with a player who was not even sure he wanted to keep going.
St. John’s may be based in New York. But this story starts in Montgomery County.
