USA Taekwondo’s American Open East tournament is returning to Valley Forge next weekend with record-breaking momentum, bringing more than 1,300 athletes and coaches to Montgomery County and marking a 29 percent increase in participation over last year.
The tournament will take place in Oaks, May 29-31, near Valley Forge and King of Prussia, continuing to strengthen Montgomery County’s reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events, national competitions, and sports tourism.
Competitors from across the United States will travel to Pennsylvania to compete in one of the nation’s fastest-growing taekwondo events, spanning multiple age divisions and skill levels.
Event Director Christy Simmons said the tournament’s continued growth reflects the expanding popularity of taekwondo nationwide.
“This growth reflects the expanding passion for taekwondo across the United States and the commitment of our community to excellence, sportsmanship, and development at every level,” Simmons said. “Events like this not only elevate competition but also strengthen the foundation of our sport for future generations.”
For USA Taekwondo CEO Steve McNally, the tournament’s success signals its growing importance on the national competition calendar.
“The American Open East is no longer a new event,” McNally said. “It’s established, it’s growing, and it belongs on every serious competitor’s calendar. If we’re going to achieve our goal of being competitive across all age categories on the world stage, we have to give our athletes the quality competition opportunities they need to develop. Events like this one are exactly how we build that foundation.”
The American Open East is part of USA Taekwondo’s broader strategy to support long-term athlete development while preparing competitors for elite international competition, including the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, and World Championships.
As participation continues to grow, the tournament also delivers a significant tourism and economic impact for Montgomery County, drawing athletes, coaches, families, and spectators to local hotels, restaurants, and attractions throughout the Valley Forge and King of Prussia region.
