Sixth-grade students from across the Philadelphia region are visiting Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood for a hands-on health education field trip, writes Nicole Leonard for WHYY.
The trip focused on puberty, anatomy, pregnancy, substance abuse, and overall wellness. Students learn through giant anatomical models, interactive displays, and immersive lessons designed to make sensitive health topics easier to understand.
Schools from Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Delaware participate in the long-running initiative. The program reaches thousands of students each year.
Students from Saint Elizabeth Parish School in Chester Springs recently toured the center, rotating through lessons on reproductive health, fetal development, brain science, and alcohol awareness.
While the topics initially sparked nervous laughter, educators said students quickly became engaged and curious. The program is also designed to help students continue those conversations at home.
“It gives them an opportunity now, I think, with some confidence to go home and have those conversations,” teacher Maria Fraser said. “It kind of gives them an excuse to say, ‘Hey, Mom, we did this today. You know, what exactly does this mean?”
Educators at Lankenau say programs like this remain critical as schools face changing priorities and budget pressures surrounding health curriculum. “With cuts in education, we don’t know,” Maureen Krouse said. “But they need health education.”
The field trips arrive as educators and medical professionals continue emphasizing the importance of giving students medically accurate, age-appropriate information during major physical and emotional stages of development.
