Governor Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro recently paid a visit to Elmwood Park Zoo, touring the newly completed Frank and Paige Engro Welcome Center and Veterinary Hospital and getting a firsthand look at the Zoo’s ambitious plans for the future.
The visit was a chance to see the results of a $3 million state investment up close. Governor Shapiro authorized the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funding in 2024, which helped bring the new Welcome Center and Veterinary Hospital to life — a project that’s already reshaping the guest and animal care experience at the Zoo.
“Elmwood Park Zoo has become a major regional destination, growing annual attendance from 119,000 visitors in 2011 to more than 1.3 million today,” Governor Shapiro said. “That’s a big deal — and my Administration will continue to invest in projects that boost tourism, create jobs, and support local economies like this one in Norristown.”
The afternoon included tours of the new facilities, meetings with Zoo leadership and staff, and a few memorable animal moments, including an encounter with Reggie, one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ live eagle mascots; Stella, the live owl mascot for Temple; and a giraffe feeding with Dhoruba.
“Today was an incredible opportunity to showcase not only the transformation of our campus, but also the vision we have for the future,” said Al Zone, CEO of Elmwood Park Zoo. “We are grateful to Governor Shapiro and the Commonwealth for their support of projects that continue to elevate the guest experience, strengthen animal care, and expand our ability to serve the community.”
What’s Next for the Zoo
Zoo leadership also shared updates on their ongoing Master Plan, which outlines future exhibit enhancements, expanded amenities, accessibility improvements, and continued campus growth in the years ahead.
Elmwood Park Zoo holds a distinction that’s worth highlighting: it’s the world’s first Certified Autism Center Zoo, a designation earned in 2018. The Zoo has built that commitment into everything from staff training to sensory-friendly resources and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and that work was front and center during the Shapiros’ visit.
What Local Leaders Are Saying
“The Zoo brings nature and the beauty of wildlife right into our backyards, and its new Welcome Center and Veterinary Health Center further strengthen its role as a leader in wildlife and environmental conservation,” said Senator Amanda Cappelletti of PA’s 17th Senatorial District.
Representative Greg Scott of PA’s 54th House District echoed the sentiment: “Their commitment to our neighborhood and to the animals they care for is unparalleled. The new facilities we toured today position them to become even stronger leaders in the care of exotic animals.”
The Frank and Paige Engro Welcome Center and Veterinary Hospital opened in 2024 and serves as the cornerstone of the Zoo’s evolving campus — a visible sign of what’s possible when community investment and institutional vision come together.
