A piece of Lower Merion history just fetched millions, as a rare card featuring Kobe Bryant sold for $3.15 million, writes Michael Tanenbaum for The Philly Voice.
The ultra-rare 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green card, produced during Bryant’s second NBA season, is one of only 10 ever made. Its scarcity and connection to Bryant’s early rise have made it one of the most coveted items in the sports collectibles world. This latest sale has set a new benchmark for his individual cards.
Bryant, a Lower Merion native and high school standout, remains a central figure in the region’s sports legacy. While many of his rookie-era cards feature him in an NBA uniform, some also trace back to his days at Lower Merion High School. These only further fuel demand among local collectors and fans.
The record-setting purchase reflects a broader trend, as high-end sports cards increasingly attract investors alongside traditional collectors. Industry analysts say the global trading card market continues to surge, with rare pieces now viewed similarly to fine art or other alternative assets.
The sale is another reminder of Bryant’s enduring influence, one that continues to resonate not just on the court, but in markets and communities around the world.
