Conshohocken’s Mike Avena is redefining train travel in the U.S. with Halloway Rail, writes Evie Carrick for Travel + Leisure.
The luxury rail line is expanding its lineup of journeys, offering travelers a high-end experience aboard private rail cars attached to traditional Amtrak routes.
Following an initial launch earlier this year, Halloway Rail has added four new trips for summer 2026. The journeys run along Amtrak’s California Zephyr route, widely considered one of the most scenic in North America, connecting Chicago, Denver, and the San Francisco area.
Along the way, travelers pass through the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Rockies, and dramatic landscapes like Glenwood Canyon, with options for shorter or full-length trips. Pricing reflects the exclusive nature of the experience, with trips costing tens of thousands of dollars for groups of up to six passengers.
The concept blends classic rail travel with upscale amenities. Guests book exclusive access to restored vintage rail cars, including a five-bedroom sleeper car and a lounge car topped with a glass viewing dome. Each trip includes a private chef, gourmet meals, and dedicated onboard service — a far cry from the standard train experience.
