Montgomery County is building a new supportive housing center in Norristown to help residents experiencing homelessness, according to Jim Melwert for KYW Newsradio.

Montgomery County officials broke ground on a new supportive housing center in Norristown, marking another step in the county’s effort to address homelessness.

The facility, located near the county’s Health and Human Services campus on DeKalb Street, is expected to open later this year and will provide transitional housing for about 50 residents. It will become the county’s third center of its kind. There are similar locations in Pottstown and Lansdale.

County leaders say the project is designed to go beyond a traditional shelter model. The center will offer structured, short-term housing along with support services such as job placement assistance. Officials hope to help residents regain stability and transition into permanent housing.

Montco leaders point to a clear need in Norristown, where roughly 100 people are experiencing homelessness on any given night. The new facility is intended to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals facing sudden hardships, such as job loss or injury.

Local leaders also emphasized that the program will be tightly managed, with 24/7 staffing and security, ensuring both resident support and neighborhood stability.
