For aspiring filmmakers in Montgomery County, breaking into the industry can feel out of reach. One Norristown native is working to change that, according to The Reporter.
Nate Reynolds launched the Black Lion Indie Film Festival to create opportunities for creatives closer to home.
The festival returns for its third year, May 1 through 3 at The Centre Theater. The event will showcase a wide range of work, including narrative shorts, documentaries, music videos, and feature films, with awards across 13 categories.
Norristown’s Reynolds designed the festival to be accessible to filmmakers at all levels. This year introduces new categories for animation, college films, and high school films. Notably, the high school category is exclusive to Montgomery County students and includes a scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing a career in filmmaking.
The festival is also expanding beyond screenings. An opening-night networking mixer will connect filmmakers with professionals from outside the industry, encouraging collaboration and helping local creators bring projects to life. Attendees can also catch an encore screening of last year’s award-winning documentary focused on incarceration and second chances.
With support from sponsors and a growing local presence, Reynolds hopes to continue building a creative hub in Norristown.
