Rooted in the same historic landscape that witnessed the American Revolution, the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board (VFTCB) continues its mission of sharing the stories that define Montgomery County, especially as we approach America’s 250th Anniversary.

Through monthly historic vignettes and upcoming initiatives like the Houses of Declaration, VFTCB is continuing a legacy by sharing the stories of historical landmarks that #MakeItMontco and connect to the founding of our nation. This month, VFTCB is highlighting Pennypacker Mills.

If you are looking for a historical site where it feels like you have traveled back in time, Pennypacker Mills is the place for you! Here, you can immerse yourself in early 1900s life in the mansion of former Pennsylvania Governor, Samuel W. Pennypacker. The home was expanded into a Colonial Revival Mansion and filled with collections reflecting Pennsylvania’s history and culture.

The mansion itself was originally built in 1720 by Hans Jost Hite, where the land was a stone grist mill and farm. Peter Pannebacker purchased the mill in 1747, and it belonged to the family for eight generations. During the American Revolution in 1777, Pennypacker Mills served as a temporary headquarters and field hospital following the Battle of Germantown. Samuel Pennypacker made the mansion his summer home and had it redesigned and expanded by Arthur Brockie in 1901 to enhance the country lifestyle and Colonial Revival.

Today, Pennypacker Mills remains a well-preserved historical site, offering tourists a glimpse into 18th-century industry and early 20th-century life. Engaging programs for all ages will be featured throughout the year such as living history and reenactments during the Revolutionary War Weekend on May 16-17, and Gallery Talks for a new exhibit on Apr. 19, Preserving Valley Forge: A Family Affair. Free guided tours are available year-round!

The VFTCB’s Houses of Declaration Initiative will be a countywide effort to highlight historic landmarks connected to the American Revolution and the founding of our nation for the celebration of the United States’ Sesquicentennial with live readings of the Declaration of Independence.

While each historic site tells its own unique story, together they create a broader picture of Montgomery County’s role in America’s independence. Through this initiative and storytelling efforts, we invite everyone to explore the places that have shaped our past and continue to define Montco today. We invite you to explore even more through our Montco History Pass. This is a free digital pass giving the convenience of more historic locations all in one place. Learn more and sign up here!
