Rooted in the same historic landscape that witnessed the American Revolution, the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board (VFTCB) continues its mission of sharing the stories that define Montgomery County, especially as we approach America’s 250th Anniversary.
Through monthly historic vignettes and upcoming initiatives like the Houses of Declaration, VFTCB is continuing a legacy by sharing the stories of historical landmarks that #MakeItMontco and connect to the founding of our nation.
This month, VFTCB is featuring the Peter Wentz Farmstead and Homestead. This 18th-century Pennsylvania German farm in Worchester Township was established in 1744 by Peter and Rosanna Wentz. The Wentz’s farmhouse reflects both German heritage and Georgian design, offering insight into everyday colonial life in Montgomery County.
In October 1777, during the Philadelphia Campaign, George Washington used the Wentz home as a temporary headquarters as British forces made their advance toward Philadelphia. Plans that were developed here shaped the movements of the Continental Army just weeks before the encampment at Valley Forge, placing this quiet farm at the center of a pivotal moment in American History.
Today, the homestead and farmstead are interpreted as they would have appeared in the 1770s, complete with period furnishings, outbuildings, and agricultural demonstrations. As we commemorate America 250, sites like the Wentz estate remind us that the story of independence unfolded not only in famous halls but in local homes and communities across Montgomery County.
The VFTCB’s Houses of Declaration Initiative will be a countywide effort to highlight historic landmarks connected to the American Revolution and the founding of our nation in celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial, featuring live readings of the Declaration of Independence.
While each historic site tells its own unique story, together they create a broader picture of Montgomery County’s role in America’s independence. Through this initiative and storytelling efforts, VFTCB invites everyone to explore the places that have shaped our past and continue to define Montco today. VFTCB invites you to explore even more through its Montco History Pass. This is a free digital pass that provides access to more historic locations in one place.
