Montgomery County had a strong presence in Harrisburg as Jill Biden and Lori Shapiro joined a panel of Pennsylvania’s current and former first ladies during Women’s History Month, writes Gillian McGoldrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Biden, a Willow Grove native, and Shapiro, an Abington resident, were among the featured speakers at the state Capitol event, which offered insight into a role that often operates behind the scenes. Alongside former first ladies, the discussion focused on leadership, public service and the evolving role of women in shaping communities across Pennsylvania.
Shapiro has largely maintained a low public profile as the wife of Governor Josh Shapiro. She stepped into the spotlight to highlight her work expanding access to free menstrual products in schools and promoting workforce opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Biden used the time to reflect on decades in public life. She spoke about issues ranging from veterans support to cancer research, while encouraging women to pursue independence through education and career development.
The panel also underscored the importance of mentorship, with speakers urging women to support and uplift the next generation of leaders. Biden, who described herself as “Jilly from Philly,” emphasized resilience and self-sufficiency, drawing from personal experiences.
