The iconic Blue Bell Inn, one of the oldest continually operating inns in the country, serves up a piece of American history with every meal, write Kim Hudson and Casey Kuhn for CBS News.

Since 1743, the Montgomery County inn has served guests in the building once called The White House, welcoming a Revolutionary War icon among its first visitors.

“After the Battle of Germantown in 1777, George Washington and his troops – after defeat – actually came to The White House, and George Washington frequently stayed here,” said Marketing Director Jake Minkoff.

A name change was ordered to distinguish it from other white houses.

“The way that they did that was to install a blue bell right over at the top of our patio here,” said Minkoff. “And, so that people could see the bell, and changed the name to the Blue Bell Inn.”

The name and the bell became so iconic that they transformed the identity of the entire town, which was renamed from Pigeontown to Blue Bell.

Even centuries later, the inn continues to attract fans who savor modern offerings like the ultimate Blue Burger.
