One year after a massive fire consumed its Abington Township plant, SPS Technologies’ plan to rebuild drew praise from the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.
“All three of us just met with the SPS leadership – Dan Gear, the general manager, and Dave Dugan, the government relations head – and it’s great news that we are going to see the factory come back,” said Commissioner Neil Makhija.
In February 2025, a fire engulfed the century-old aerospace fastener facility, causing 68 fire companies throughout the region to respond. The blaze lasted for days before crews were able to fully extinguish the embers. No lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
In the aftermath, SPS had to let go of roughly 250 employees and announced plans in September 2025 for a new two-story, 350,000-square-foot facility. Most residents have long been hoping for the return of the factory, which is a vital local jobs hub.
“It’s going to be a state-of-the-art facility, and while there were 500 jobs, this is going to be 250 jobs due to automation,” said Makhija.
