Montgomery County is home to a number of historic theaters that preserve the magic of old-school moviegoing while serving as cultural anchors for their communities. Here’s a look at five of the county’s best-known gems.
Bryn Mawr Film Institute – Bryn Mawr
This Spanish Gothic Revival opened in 1926 as the Seville Theater. It has since been fully restored and transformed into a nonprofit cultural hub. Today, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute screens independent and international films while offering film education programs for all ages.
The Grand Theater – East Greenville
Built in 1924, the Grand Theater is one of the oldest operating single-screen theaters in the Philadelphia area. Painstakingly restored, it features its original marquee. It even features a working Wurlitzer pipe organ, providing moviegoers with a truly vintage experience.
Ambler Theater – Ambler
This Art Deco treasure opened in 1928 by Warner Bros., and bounced back from decline in the early 2000s. A nonprofit now operates The Ambler Theater and offers independent film screenings, festivals, and community events in its beautifully renovated space.
Hiway Theater – Jenkintown
Dating back to 1913, the Hiway Theater is one of the oldest movie houses in Pennsylvania. Renovated and reopened in 2003, it continues to serve as a local gathering spot, showing a mix of arthouse films and family favorites.
The Broad Theater – Souderton
The Broad Theater opened in July 1922 and closed in 2004. After a major renovation, it was reborn in 2019 with its original facade restored. The new owners modernized the interior, adding three modern screens. Today, it blends classic charm with state-of-the-art cinema.
Many of today’s theaters race toward the future with IMAX screens and seats that recline and vibrate. But for moviegoers looking for popcorn with a side of nostalgic Americana, these theaters are the perfect destination.
