Lower Merion Football Merger Proposal Hits a Pause at School Board

Lower Merion school officials delay a vote on merging high school football teams as safety reviews and community discussions continue.

A proposal that could reshape high school football in Lower Merion remains on hold, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for The Delco Times.

The Lower Merion School District school board voted last week against adding a merger discussion to its public meeting agenda.

The request, introduced by board member Sarah Thomas, would have opened the door to a vote on merging the football programs at Lower Merion High School and Harriton High School, an idea that has circulated among some parents in recent months. Thomas cited player safety concerns as the driving force behind her push for immediate action.

District leaders signaled that the issue is already under review. Board President Kerry Sautner said Superintendent Frank Ranelli is working with coaches, athletes, and community members while a broader safety audit and committee discussions continue.

Ranelli previously recommended against a merger, pointing to district surveys showing strong opposition from players. Nearly all Lower Merion players surveyed favored keeping their own team, while a significant majority of Harriton players expressed the same preference.

Other board members raised concerns about equity, governance, and potential legal implications. By a 7–2 vote, the board declined to add the item to the agenda, though members stressed the conversation is ongoing and could return at a future meeting.
