While IKEA has announced several showroom closures globally, the bigger story locally is the company’s pivot toward smaller “plan and order” locations, according to Jess Rohan for The Bucks County Courier Times.
The strategy is already taking shape in the Philadelphia suburbs.
IKEA is maintaining its two full-scale area stores in South Philadelphia and Conshohocken, with no plans to close either. The Conshohocken site also serves as IKEA’s North American headquarters, anchoring the brand’s presence in Montgomery County.
Instead of expanding traditional big-box showrooms, IKEA is investing in compact plan-and-order points. These locations allow customers to meet with staff, design kitchens or storage systems, and place orders for later pickup. The experience leaves out the warehouse-style shopping experience. A site is already operating in Cherry Hill, and another is slated to open at the Promenade at Granite Run west of Media this spring.
The company is also strengthening its e-commerce network, with distribution centers operating in Milford and Burlington County to support online growth.
While some global showrooms are closing, IKEA’s local footprint remains steady. Its evolving retail model suggests Montco will continue playing a central role in the company’s North American strategy.
