Elmwood Park Zoo Wins National Award for New Veterinary Center

Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo wins a national AZA award for its new $30M Veterinary Health and Welcome Center.

Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo continues its transformation into a premier regional attraction, earning national recognition from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.

The zoo has received the prestigious Facility-Innovation Award for its Frank & Paige Engro Veterinary Health and Welcome Center, which officially opened in June 2024. The award honors outstanding design and construction for non-exhibit facilities that support a zoo’s mission.

Competing against dozens of new animal hospitals, education buildings, and visitor amenities across the country, Elmwood stood out for its blend of state-of-the-art care and community engagement.

Philanthropists Frank and Paige Engro funded the center with a landmark $30 million gift. The center is the largest expansion in the zoo’s history. Its veterinary hospital gives guests a rare glimpse into animal care through expansive viewing bays. The Welcome Center offers modern amenities, including a café, coffee shop, gift shop, and a plaza designed to mimic the natural flow of Norristown’s Stony Creek. Interactive exhibits also highlight the zoo’s century-long history and growth.

The award further cements the Norristown zoo as a world-class institution.
