Cheltenham’s parks hold more than trails and trees. They hold clues to how the community grew, adapted, and chose to preserve space for public life.
This February, Cheltenham Celebrates America 250 brings those stories forward through two public programs focused on the township’s park system and its deeper ties to American history.
The series begins Saturday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Curtis Hall, 1250 Church Road. Parks that Connect to the Gilded Age explores how late 19th century ideas around leisure, landscape design, and civic pride shaped Cheltenham’s green spaces.
Large estates, early planning efforts, and protected land helped define neighborhoods and continue to influence how residents move through and enjoy these parks today.
The second program takes place Saturday, February 21 at 3:00 p.m. at Elkins Central (Elkins Park Train Station), 7879 Spring Avenue. Parks that Connect to Schools looks at former school sites that later became parks.
The talk traces what those changes reveal about population shifts, land use decisions, and the community’s evolving priorities.
Together, the programs show how everyday places in Cheltenham connect local history to the national story behind America 250.
