Montco Commissioners Reorganize, Spotlight Collaboration

Montgomery County commissioners reorganized for 2026, reaffirming leadership roles and highlighting bipartisan cooperation.

Montgomery County’s Board of Commissioners officially reorganized for 2026 this week, while emphasizing collaboration and bipartisan progress across the county, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.

Commissioner Jamila Winder was selected as chairwoman, with Neil Makhija named vice chairman. The move mirrors the board’s early leadership structure. It also reflects what both leaders described as a shared, cooperative approach to governing Montgomery County.

Republican Commissioner Tom DiBello nominated himself for both roles during the meeting, though the final votes were unanimous. Despite the moment, commissioners stressed unity, pointing to their ability to work across party lines on major issues affecting residents.

That cooperation was highlighted by the county’s recently adopted $632.7 million operating budget for fiscal year 2026, approved unanimously and marking the first bipartisan county budget in nearly a decade. Commissioners also cited ongoing efforts tied to homelessness, mental health services, and cost-of-living pressures. The county has upcoming facilities in Lansdale and Upper Merion Township.

Looking ahead, county leaders expect 2026 to bring increased visibility tied to national celebrations and continued scrutiny of county spending and priorities. As Winder noted, advancing Montgomery County’s agenda will require continued accountability, transparency, and collective leadership.
