There’s a County in New York That Dares to Call Itself Delco

Delco, New York is promoting its own rural culture and selling merchandise, in contrast to the Delco culture here in Delaware County.

Delco always prided itself on its unique culture and general weirdness.

Now Delaware County,  New York, is promoting its own Delco culture, with a website and merchandise, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The website promotes DELCO as a “ lifestyle brand celebrating rural culture, design & authentic content in Upstate NY.” It sells shirts and hoodies, flags in “John Deer Green,” and a trucker hat, all emblazoned with “DELCO, New York.”

That’s despite our residents spending years putting the word Delco on everything, Farr writes.

Delaware County, New York, has a population of 44,308, covering 1,467 square miles.

Both Delaware Counties are apparently named after the Delaware River. They are two of six in the country, though Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was the first, established in 1789.

Delco’s a hyperlocal county, with its own accent, history, and love language, said Zac Beaver, programming and libraries manager for the Delaware County Historical Society.

“We’ve defined what it means to be Delco,” said Rob MacPherson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Visit Delco.

Visit Delco’s marketing strategist, Fran McElwee, concurs.

“We are who we are, and we know it,” she said. “We’re the OG.”
