Central Bucks School District to Begin Teaching AI Literacy in the Classroom

Central Bucks School District will be implementing AI in its classrooms, teaching AI literacy, and laying out rules for ethical use.

Central Bucks School District is taking artificial intelligence head-on, teaching AI literacy to students and establishing rules for ethical use in the classroom, writes Jess Rohan for the Bucks County Courier Times.

“Kids are using this, whether we’re turning this pilot on or not,” said assistant technology director Lindsay Smith at Central Bucks. “We can’t not talk about AI in the world.”

Three teachers at CB West and two at CB East will be introducing AI in their curricula, which include social studies, computer science, and English.

The process of allowing students access to AI has been a slow one as school district officials determine the best ways to navigate the process.

Students will be taught responsible and safe AI use, academic honesty with AI use, and creating prompts effectively.

“Right now what kids are doing [without the curriculum] is uploading an assignment and saying, ‘Write me an essay,’” said Smith.

Since December, teachers in the school district have been trained on Microsoft Copilot.

Jason Jaffe, the head of the district technology department, said the implementation comes after two years of research.

Families will be able to opt out of the program.
