Independent filmmaker Michael Zolomij is coming back to West Chester with his latest short comedy film, Becoming The Man: A Prequel, an eight-minute exploration of joy, community, and the search for meaning set against the backdrop of beloved Hop Fidelity record store.
The film serves as a prequel to Zolomij’s previous comedic short, RIP: Kevin The Man, and finds protagonist Kevin in a dark time, desperately needing help and searching for family and culture.
Shot entirely in beautiful downtown West Chester, Becoming The Man reunites the core cast from the original film, with Kevin Suplee (Hop Fidelity employee), Byron Greatorex (Hop Fidelity owner), Michael Zolomij, Scott Derby (local illustrator and designer), and Rob Frankel (local actor) all reprising their roles. Newcomer Dan Porto (local set designer) joins the ensemble, bringing fresh energy to the tight-knit cast.
“This film is about finding your joy when everything feels lost,” said Zolomij.
The project continues his commitment to micro-budget independent filmmaking, proving that compelling stories can be told without Hollywood resources. By shooting locally and supporting West Chester’s thriving small business community, the production highlights the creative potential of the region.
Becoming The Man: A Prequel will premiere at Hop Fidelity on Jan. 2 at 8 PM.
It has been submitted to the West Chester Film Festival—where RIP: Kevin The Man was the runner-up to its audience choice award—and FirstGlance Film Festival in Philadelphia, with a wider festival release to be determined.
