Springfield Elementary Schools Honor Ruby Bridges with Annual Walk to School Day

Springfield schools and families will honor civil rights icon Ruby Bridges with walks and lessons on courage and inclusion on November 14.

Students and families in Springfield Township will once again come together to honor a Civil Rights trailblazer during the annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14, 2025.

The event, organized by the Enfield and Erdenheim Home & School Partnership (EEHSP), celebrates courage, inclusion, and the ongoing pursuit of equality in education.

The day honors Ruby Bridges, who in 1960 became the first Black student to attend a previously all-white elementary school in New Orleans, an act of bravery that became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

At Enfield and Erdenheim Elementary Schools, students will take part in classroom discussions and activities exploring empathy, courage, and what it means to be a “Changemaker” in their communities. Families and community members are encouraged to join the school-wide walks:  9:15 a.m. at Enfield Elementary and 2:00 p.m. at Erdenheim Elementary.

“Her courage became a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement,” said organizers. “(She) continues to inspire generations of “Changemakers.”
