Philadelphia Premium Outlets in Limerick is one of the many outlet centers that are continuing to thrive while many traditional malls decline, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The outdoor plaza is the main shopping destination for many local families, even in cold weather.
“We get great deals,” said Kim Woodman, of Hatboro.
Walking through the 550,000-square-foot plaza provides many visitors with an experience that cannot be duplicated online. Kathy Nelson from Broomall shops at Philadelphia Premium Outlets and occasionally at King of Prussia Mall, which she says is the only indoor mall that still has the selection of stores she likes.
The trend of dying malls alongside thriving outlets has been nationwide. Philadelphia Premium Outlets is currently 92 percent occupied.
It has achieved significant success despite being only 20 miles from one of the largest indoor malls in the country, the King of Prussia Mall. It has recently added a range of new tenants, such as Marc Jacobs’ first Pennsylvania outlet store as well as a BOSS outlet.
“Outlets do good in good times and great in bad times,” said Lisa Wagner, a longtime consultant for outlets.
