The future of Exton Square Mall remains uncertain as the developer takes township officials to court after they rejected its plan for the massive shopping plaza, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Elkins Park’s Abrams Realty & Development submitted plans to transform the 75-acre property into a mixed-use development with hundreds of townhouses, rental apartments, a 55+ community, and a town center with retail, restaurants, medical offices, and open green space.
The project was rejected last month by West Whiteland Township Supervisors Brian Dunn and Rajesh Kumbhardare. They cited sewer, traffic, and density among their concerns, which went against the commission’s earlier approval recommendation.
Abrams sued the supervisors in the hope of forcing the plan’s approval.
“It’s completely ridiculous to look at a dead mall and say that should be the standard,” said CEO Peter Abrams.
He added that the proposed project is “the best option for this property, all things considered.”
Supervisors Dunn and Kumbhardare said their votes reflected the best interests of residents, who would bear the cost of sewer upgrades and face even more traffic in an already crowded area.
