Montgomery County Allocates $1.1M to Combat Food Insecurity

With food insecurity on the rise, Montco officials hope that a $1.1 million funding infusion will make an impact in combating hunger.

With food insecurity on the rise, Montgomery County officials are hoping that a $1.1 million funding infusion will make a meaningful impact in combating hunger, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.

Last week, the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network received a $500,000 food purchasing grant at a check presentation at the Upper Merion Area Community Cupboard. Another $610,000 will fund infrastructure improvement projects for local food pantries through the county’s inaugural Food Policy Council.

Friday’s ceremonial proceedings, attended by nonprofit leaders and elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels, highlighted the growing crisis of hunger and food insecurity in the county.

“We have a serious problem with food insecurity in a place it shouldn’t exist, and what we’re showing today through our commitment … is we care about every one of these families,” said Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairman Neil Makhija.

Since 2023, Montgomery County has directed $1.5 million to the Ambler-based MontCo Anti-Hunger Network through the Nourish Montco grant program, helping the nonprofit assist 73 local food pantries.

“The impact is truly transformative,” said MontCo Anti-Hunger Network Executive Director Shannon Isaacs. “It makes a really big difference to food pantries.”
