Local college students are getting an inside look at Pennsylvania Turnpike operations this summer as interns, including time at its King of Prussia offices, writes Mike DeNardo for KYW Newsradio.
One of them is Kayla Franchetti, who is having some issues explaining to her friends what she is actually going to be doing.
“I told a couple of people over the summer, ‘I have an internship with the Turnpike,’” she said. “Multiple times, the reaction is, ‘Oh, are you collecting tolls?’ And I was like, ‘Um, actually, no!’”
An industrial engineering junior at the University of Pittsburgh, Franchetti often reminds people that the Turnpike phased out toll collectors some time ago. In recent months, she has even witnessed several toll booths being demolished.
Meanwhile, Penn State sophomore Pranjal Majumdar has been working with the inspection staff during the widening of the Northeast Extension during his internship.
“You’re meeting a lot of new people,” he said. “You’re seeing the scale to which these projects are being built.”
A total of around 20 college students got the unique chance to learn about the Pennsylvania Turnpike from the inside out over the summer.
