In the quiet fields of Pottstown, 80 horses are living out their golden years with dignity and care at Ryerss Horse Farm for Aged Equines, reports Tom Kretschmer for Action News Philadelphia.
This unique Montco nonprofit is Pennsylvania’s oldest horse retirement facility, and one of the largest in the state.
Founded as a sanctuary for senior, abused, and rescued horses, Ryerss is open year-round and powered by compassion. Karen Moore, the farm’s Animal Welfare Manager, says she feels honored to care for these animals, calling it “the life we would all want.”
“We have a lot of people who laugh and say, ‘Can we rent a stall and retire here ourselves?’”
Each horse at Ryerss comes with a story but all are met with open pastures, good company, and attentive veterinary care. Veterinarian Colleen Meeuse explains that aging horses often deal with arthritis and hoof issues, requiring extra support. But with love and specialized treatment, they thrive.
Visitors of all ages come to feed, brush, and bond with the horses, forming a powerful connection that goes both ways. As one young guest put it, “I love animals… I like to feed the horses and pet the horses.”
