Montgomery County Commissioners Celebrate AAPI-Owned Businesses

Executive Chef Felipe Calixto of The Blue Elephant prepares a dish in the restaurant’s kitchen — one of the AAPI-owned businesses recognized by Montgomery County during AAPI Heritage Month.

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Montgomery County shined a spotlight on local AAPI-owned businesses during the May 20 Board of Commissioners’ meeting.

The recognition, led by Board Chairman Neil Makhija and Board Vice Chairwoman Jamila Winder, honored entrepreneurs who are making significant economic, cultural, and community impacts across the county.

Before the meeting, honorees gathered for an informal meet-and-greet with the Commissioners — a chance to connect, share their stories, and build deeper ties with county leadership.

“As the son of first-generation immigrants, I’m very proud to recognize these businesses,” said Makhija. “Immigrant communities are revitalizing neighborhoods throughout Montgomery County, and we welcome your entrepreneurship and your energy.”

AAPI-Owned Businesses Honored

Tango Belt (ActiveProtective)

Based in Fort Washington, ActiveProtective developed the Tango Belt — a discreet, wearable device designed to protect seniors from serious fall-related injuries. Unlike traditional mobility aids that restrict movement, the Tango Belt uses smart sensors to detect high-impact falls and instantly deploys hidden airbags over the hips to cushion impact. It also sends real-time alerts to caregivers, offering peace of mind and empowering seniors to live more independently and stay active longer.

The Blue Elephant

Located in the heart of Pottstown, The Blue Elephant blends history, elegance, and bold culinary creativity. Since opening in 2019, the restaurant has transformed a building dating back to 1770 — complete with preserved brasswork and original bank vaults — into a stunning modern space featuring Mediterranean olive trees and a 10-foot fountain. The menu reflects an inventive fusion of Thai, Italian, and Japanese influences, offering sushi, pasta, and signature cocktails in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

Mobility Plus Norristown

Locally owned and operated, Mobility Plus Norristown is part of a national network focused on supporting individuals with mobility challenges. Opened in early 2025 at 2123 West Main Street, the store provides a wide range of mobility solutions — from power scooters and wheelchairs to stairlifts, ramps, and lift chairs. Their team offers both sales and rentals, expert installation, and free in-home consultations to help customers find the best fit for their needs. With a mission rooted in accessibility and independence, Mobility Plus is already making an impact across Norristown and Montgomery County.

Spotlighting AAPI Businesses Through Strategic Outreach

Chairman Makhija recognized the Montgomery County Commerce Department for its work in identifying and connecting with AAPI-owned businesses across the County. The department’s outreach efforts made it possible to bring these entrepreneurs into the spotlight during the Commissioners’ meeting.
