Bryn Mawr-Based ML Car Service Acquires Maxwell Taxi Cab

Maxwell Taxi Cab, a Lower Merion institution that closed last year, finds new life after being acquired by Bryn Mawr-based ML Car Service.

Maxwell Taxi Cab, a Lower Merion institution that closed late last year, has found new life after being acquired by BrynMawr-based ML Car Service, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The limo service took over Maxwell’s phone number in April, shortly after its closure was covered by The Inquirer.

“My wife actually sent me the article and basically was like, ‘Here is the thing you’ve always been talking about,’” said Jerry Hevey, CEO and managing member of the 10-year-old ML Car Service. “With Maxwell’s 50 years serving the Main Line, it checked all the boxes.”

Hevey believes there is demand for an old-school car and limo service despite the pandemic and rideshare apps undercutting the taxi business, and rising insurance and repair costs driving many cabs off the street.

“There is definitely competition on all levels,” said Hevey. But “I think our pricing falls in line with rideshare,” especially when you consider that it would cost about the same to get a similar vehicle to ML’s Cadillac Escalade, a Lincoln sedan, or a Tesla, which would be under Uber’s “Premier” category.
