Gwynedd Mercy Academy Crew Rises from Scratch to a Season of Firsts

Gwynedd Mercy Academy Crew ends a breakout season with five seniors committing to row in college and a milestone regatta trip to England.

Gwynedd Mercy Academy crew has quickly evolved from a fledgling program into one of Montco’s rising athletic success stories, writes Isabella DiAmore for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Just six years ago, parent Lou McCormick suggested the school add a rowing team. Since then, the Lower Gwynedd program grew into a competitive force, thanks in large part to McCormick himself. He stepped into a coaching role and never looked back.

Powered by a no-nonsense winter workout regime and training at Conshohocken’s Hines Rowing Center, the team just capped its strongest season yet. The team earned its first gold medal at the Stotesbury Cup regatta and later became national champs at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America.

Five graduating seniors dubbed the ‘Final Five’ will continue rowing at the collegiate level this fall at Notre Dame, Loyola University Maryland, Kansas, and West Virginia.

Their success reflects years of early morning practices, offseason dedication and unshakeable teamwork.

This spring, Gwynedd Mercy’s varsity four and pair even traveled to England to compete in a prestigious regatta on the River Thames. Though they didn’t advance beyond the semifinals, the experience proved transformational.

“Crew isn’t just about rowing a boat down the river,” McCormick said. “It’s about life lessons.”
