Is Conshohocken Site of Former Cleveland-Cliffs Poised for a Future in Tech?

Conshohocken’s idled Cleveland-Cliffs is drawing data center interest, signaling a new tech chapter for the industrial Montco site.

The once busy Cleveland-Cliffs steel plant in Conshohocken may soon be reborn, writes Paul J. Gough for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

In all likelihood, its future will not be in molten metal, but in high-speed data cables. Representatives of the plant that closed earlier this year due to financial loss say they have received serious interest from data center developers.

The company noted that the Conshohocken property, along with its sister site in Steelton, offers rare infrastructure assets. It’s close to water, power, highways, and rail. That’s a gold mine for data centers, especially as artificial intelligence ramps up demand for processing power.

The idling save Cleveland-Cliffs about $45 million annually but also came at a cost to the community. 107 workers were laid off from the facility, many of whom were union members.

Whether the future of the riverside site involves sparks or servers, the interest alone signals Conshohocken’s continued appeal to industries looking for scalable, connected ground.
