King of Prussia-based Universal Health Services unveiled a new artificial intelligence initiative earlier this week, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The company partnered with California-based Hippocratic AI to deploy generative AI agents to handle discharge follow-up calls to patients. The aim of the initiative is to support clinicians in monitoring patients after hospital discharge, alert UHS clinical staff to any changes in a patient’s condition, and address patient questions.
The program is being piloted at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas and Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.
“We have been exploring and experimenting with AI for several years now – monitoring carefully and responsibly how AI can effectively support the patient-care experience,” said UHS CEO Marc D. Miller.
He added that patients have so far had a positive reaction to the early use of the tool.
“We are looking forward to continuing to expand the sample size,” said Miller.
Over the next few months, UHS plans to expand the program to ten more acute care hospitals, with full implementation across its network to follow.
