For 35 years, Brave New Worlds has been more than just a comic book shop — it’s been a community cornerstone in Willow Grove, offering a welcoming space for readers, collectors, and gamers alike. Now, the beloved local store is gearing up for its biggest day of the year: Free Comic Book Day, happening this Saturday.
Held annually on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day is a nationwide celebration designed to introduce new readers to the magic of comics. For shop owner Eric Loyack, it’s the perfect opportunity to show off everything that makes Brave New Worlds special.
“Comic books and graphic novels are a unique medium for conveying both story and emotion,” says Loyack. “I want my store to be a gateway to that so that people can experience the same joy and awe that I do when I read them.”
Visitors can choose three free comics from a wide selection, meet indie creators Steve Peters and Bianca Alu-Marr (The Comicverse), and grab a custom character sketch from Philly artist Alex Rivera. Expect a lively, costume-filled crowd and expert staff ready with recommendations.
Loyack’s top pick this year? The Energon Universe Special, blending Transformers, G.I. Joe, and other fan favorites in one action-packed story.
Beyond comics, Brave New Worlds offers gaming nights, collectibles, board games, manga, and more. “It’s a haven for low-tech entertainment in a high-tech world,” Loyack says.
First-time visitors are encouraged to explore, engage, and enjoy. “Step into another world,” says Loyack. “It’ll be bright, loud, crowded — and cheery!”
