Many former NFL coaches find great success after their coaching career ends—including former Eagles coach and East Fallowfield resident Dick Vermeil, writes Alex Hoegler for Total Pro Sports.
Vermeil coached the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976 to 1982, successfully leading the team through four playoff seasons and one Super Bowl.
After a fifteen-year break, Vermeil coached the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 1999. Vermeil returned for a final time in 2001, when he coached the Kansas City Chiefs for five years until his retirement.
Following his leave from professional sports, he has found great success in an entirely different industry: winemaking.
The Vermeil family has a long history with the winemaking process and Napa Valley. Vermeil’s grandmother was Italian, and his grandfather was French, making wine a significant cultural element to family meals.
Vermeil partnered with winemaker Paul Smith in 1999 to develop Vermeil Wines’ signature bottle, the Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today, Vermeil Wines makes eleven different wines across the winery’s several vineyards in Napa Valley, all located in the same region where Vermeil’s ancestors settled in the late nineteenth century.
