Khalid Mumin, Former Lower Merion Superintendent and PA Education Secretary, Named Reading Schools Chief

Khalid Mumin, the former Lower Merion School District superintendent is set to return as Reading School District’s superintendent once again.

Khalid Mumin, the former Lower Merion School District superintendent who stepped down as Gov. Josh Shapiro’s education secretary last year, is set to return as Reading School District’s superintendent once again, writes Maddie Hanna for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Mumin served as Lower Merion’s superintendent for just over a year before being appointed to lead the Pennsylvania Department of Education in early 2023. Before that, he led the Reading School District from 2014 to 2021.

“Dr. Mumin will succeed Dr. Jennifer Murray on June 16, 2025,” after Murray leaves the district, said Reading spokesperson Nathan Ross.

When he announced his December resignation from the position of education secretary, Mumin cited “transition into a new role” as the reason.

At the time, the Goldie Hawn Foundation stated that he would serve as its new chief of strategy/education partnerships and global development. The foundation supplies schools with MindUP, a social and emotional learning program.

Mumin is a Philadelphia native and Olney High School alum. The Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators recognized him as the superintendent of the year in 2021 for his leadership in Reading.
