On Saturday, Apr. 12, the Immaculata Symphony performs its annual spring concert, Symphonic Dances, at 7:30 PM in Immaculata University’s Alumnae Hall. The Immaculata Symphony is a university-community organization with a long and outstanding tradition that goes back to the University’s founding in 1920.
The concert features three local artists: Piano Soloist Jennifer Campbell Simione, Composer David Auldon Brown, and Composer Joseph Lorini. Lorini’s new work, “Incantation” (“Symphonic Dance” on a theme from Miles Davis), begins the concert, followed by Simione’s performance of Brown’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” a contemporary piece. Finally, the Immaculata Symphony is in full force in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances,” which premiered in the U.S. in 1940 and was the last of his major compositions.
Music Director Joseph Gehring, M.M., conducts the orchestra for this performance. He is the Chair of the Immaculata University Music Department and serves as an Assistant Professor and Director of Ensembles. Gehring has been involved with the Immaculata Symphony since 2004 and was appointed Music Director in 2011. In addition to his role with Immaculata, he serves as the music director of the West Chester Band (a community concert band) and is a member of the Chesco Pops Orchestra. He frequently directs various honor and festival bands throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware.
General admission to the spring concert is $15; senior citizens are $12. Students and children are free. Tickets are available on the night of the event and online.
